Born in Cracow in 1912, he studied history and philosophy at the Jagiellonian University and in his young years was active in Catholic and Christian academic societies. During the Nazi occupation, he took part in clandestine cultural activities. A leading intellectual with captivating personality, Turowicz was for decades a spiritual guide for the Polish democratic opposition in the communist era and his weekly was a leading independent voice at that time.
In 1960 Turowicz was member of the Polish Episcopate's commission for secular apostolic services, in the crucial year 1981 he became member of the Primate's Social Council. He was also a senior member of the World Conference on Religion and Peace and the Phi Kappa Theta Fraternity. Turowicz remained a keen observer and critic of the democratic rule in post-communist Poland. He warned against nationalism, advocated improvement in Polish-German relations and wrote about the role of the Church in public life.
In 1992, the then president Lech Walesa decorated him with the Commander's Cross with the Star of the Polonia Restituta Order. He also received a high papal order from John Paul II and honorary degrees from Yale University and Boston College in the U.S Because of his steadfast approach, and because of his shrewd leadership in times of political crisis, Turowicz became an unassailable moral authority. Since 1999, in accordance with the wishes of former editor Jerzy Turowicz, Father Adam Boniecki has been the periodical's editor-in-chief.
